24:1
سُورَةٌ
أَنزَلْنَـٰهَا
وَفَرَضْنَـٰهَا
وَأَنزَلْنَا
فِيهَآ
ءَايَـٰتٍۭ
بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ
لَّعَلَّكُمْ
تَذَكَّرُونَ
ﱊ
This is a sura We have sent down and made obligatory: We have sent down clear revelations in it, so that you may take heed.

M.A.S. Abdel Haleem

24:2
ٱلزَّانِيَةُ
وَٱلزَّانِى
فَٱجْلِدُوا۟
كُلَّ
وَٰحِدٍۢ
مِّنْهُمَا
مِا۟ئَةَ
جَلْدَةٍۢ ۖ
وَلَا
تَأْخُذْكُم
بِهِمَا
رَأْفَةٌۭ
فِى
دِينِ
ٱللَّهِ
إِن
كُنتُمْ
تُؤْمِنُونَ
بِٱللَّهِ
وَٱلْيَوْمِ
ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ ۖ
وَلْيَشْهَدْ
عَذَابَهُمَا
طَآئِفَةٌۭ
مِّنَ
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
ﱧ
Strike the adulteress and the adulterer one hundred times. Do not let compassion for them keep you from carrying out God’s law––if you believe in God and the Last Day––and ensure that a group of believers witnesses the punishment.

24:3
ٱلزَّانِى
لَا
يَنكِحُ
إِلَّا
زَانِيَةً
أَوْ
مُشْرِكَةًۭ
وَٱلزَّانِيَةُ
لَا
يَنكِحُهَآ
إِلَّا
زَانٍ
أَوْ
مُشْرِكٌۭ ۚ
وَحُرِّمَ
ذَٰلِكَ
عَلَى
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
ﱻ
The adulterer is only [fit] to marry an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress is only [fit] to marry an adulterer or an idolater: such behaviour is forbidden to believers.

24:4
وَٱلَّذِينَ
يَرْمُونَ
ٱلْمُحْصَنَـٰتِ
ثُمَّ
لَمْ
يَأْتُوا۟
بِأَرْبَعَةِ
شُهَدَآءَ
فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ
ثَمَـٰنِينَ
جَلْدَةًۭ
وَلَا
تَقْبَلُوا۟
لَهُمْ
شَهَـٰدَةً
أَبَدًۭا ۚ
وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
هُمُ
ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ
ﲐ
As for those who accuse chaste women of fornication, and then fail to provide four witnesses, strike them eighty times, and reject their testimony ever afterwards: they are the lawbreakers,

24:5
إِلَّا
ٱلَّذِينَ
تَابُوا۟
مِنۢ
بَعْدِ
ذَٰلِكَ
وَأَصْلَحُوا۟
فَإِنَّ
ٱللَّهَ
غَفُورٌۭ
رَّحِيمٌۭ
ﲜ
except for those who repent later and make amends––God is most forgiving and merciful.

24:6
وَٱلَّذِينَ
يَرْمُونَ
أَزْوَٰجَهُمْ
وَلَمْ
يَكُن
لَّهُمْ
شُهَدَآءُ
إِلَّآ
أَنفُسُهُمْ
فَشَهَـٰدَةُ
أَحَدِهِمْ
أَرْبَعُ
شَهَـٰدَٰتٍۭ
بِٱللَّهِ ۙ
إِنَّهُۥ
لَمِنَ
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
ﲮ
As for those who accuse their own wives of adultery, but have no other witnesses, let each one four times call God to witness that he is telling the truth,

24:7
وَٱلْخَـٰمِسَةُ
أَنَّ
لَعْنَتَ
ٱللَّهِ
عَلَيْهِ
إِن
كَانَ
مِنَ
ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
ﲸ
and, the fifth time, call God to reject him if he is lying;

24:8
وَيَدْرَؤُا۟
عَنْهَا
ٱلْعَذَابَ
أَن
تَشْهَدَ
أَرْبَعَ
شَهَـٰدَٰتٍۭ
بِٱللَّهِ ۙ
إِنَّهُۥ
لَمِنَ
ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
ﳄ
punishment shall be averted from his wife if she in turn four times calls God to witness that her husband is lying

24:9
وَٱلْخَـٰمِسَةَ
أَنَّ
غَضَبَ
ٱللَّهِ
عَلَيْهَآ
إِن
كَانَ
مِنَ
ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
ﳎ
and, the fifth time, calls God to reject her if he is telling the truth.

24:10
وَلَوْلَا
فَضْلُ
ٱللَّهِ
عَلَيْكُمْ
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
وَأَنَّ
ٱللَّهَ
تَوَّابٌ
حَكِيمٌ
ﳘ
If it were not for God’s bounty and mercy towards you, if it were not that God accepts repentance and is wise . . .!

24:11
إِنَّ
ٱلَّذِينَ
جَآءُو
بِٱلْإِفْكِ
عُصْبَةٌۭ
مِّنكُمْ ۚ
لَا
تَحْسَبُوهُ
شَرًّۭا
لَّكُم ۖ
بَلْ
هُوَ
خَيْرٌۭ
لَّكُمْ ۚ
لِكُلِّ
ٱمْرِئٍۢ
مِّنْهُم
مَّا
ٱكْتَسَبَ
مِنَ
ٱلْإِثْمِ ۚ
وَٱلَّذِى
تَوَلَّىٰ
كِبْرَهُۥ
مِنْهُمْ
لَهُۥ
عَذَابٌ
عَظِيمٌۭ
ﱡ
It was a group from among you that concocted the lie––do not consider it a bad thing for you [people]; it was a good thing––and every one of them will be charged with the sin he has earned. He who took the greatest part in it will have a painful punishment.

24:12
لَّوْلَآ
إِذْ
سَمِعْتُمُوهُ
ظَنَّ
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ
بِأَنفُسِهِمْ
خَيْرًۭا
وَقَالُوا۟
هَـٰذَآ
إِفْكٌۭ
مُّبِينٌۭ
ﱮ
When you heard the lie, why did believing men and women not think well of their own people and declare, ‘This is obviously a lie’?

24:13
لَّوْلَا
جَآءُو
عَلَيْهِ
بِأَرْبَعَةِ
شُهَدَآءَ ۚ
فَإِذْ
لَمْ
يَأْتُوا۟
بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
عِندَ
ٱللَّهِ
هُمُ
ٱلْكَـٰذِبُونَ
ﱾ
And why did the accusers not bring four witnesses to it? If they cannot produce such witnesses, they are the liars in God’s eyes.

24:14
وَلَوْلَا
فَضْلُ
ٱللَّهِ
عَلَيْكُمْ
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
فِى
ٱلدُّنْيَا
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ
لَمَسَّكُمْ
فِى
مَآ
أَفَضْتُمْ
فِيهِ
عَذَابٌ
عَظِيمٌ
ﲎ
If it were not for God’s bounty and mercy towards you in this world and the next, you would already have been afflicted by terrible suffering for indulging in such talk.

24:15
إِذْ
تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ
بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ
وَتَقُولُونَ
بِأَفْوَاهِكُم
مَّا
لَيْسَ
لَكُم
بِهِۦ
عِلْمٌۭ
وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ
هَيِّنًۭا
وَهُوَ
عِندَ
ٱللَّهِ
عَظِيمٌۭ
ﲟ
When you took it up with your tongues, and spoke with your mouths things you did not know [to be true], you thought it was trivial but to God it was very serious.

24:16
وَلَوْلَآ
إِذْ
سَمِعْتُمُوهُ
قُلْتُم
مَّا
يَكُونُ
لَنَآ
أَن
نَّتَكَلَّمَ
بِهَـٰذَا
سُبْحَـٰنَكَ
هَـٰذَا
بُهْتَـٰنٌ
عَظِيمٌۭ
ﲮ
When you heard the lie, why did you not say, ‘We should not repeat this- God forbid!- It is a monstrous slander’?

24:17
يَعِظُكُمُ
ٱللَّهُ
أَن
تَعُودُوا۟
لِمِثْلِهِۦٓ
أَبَدًا
إِن
كُنتُم
مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ﲸ
God warns you never to do anything like this again, if you are true believers.

24:18
وَيُبَيِّنُ
ٱللَّهُ
لَكُمُ
ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ۚ
وَٱللَّهُ
عَلِيمٌ
حَكِيمٌ
ﳁ
God makes His messages clear to you: God is all knowing, all wise.

24:19
إِنَّ
ٱلَّذِينَ
يُحِبُّونَ
أَن
تَشِيعَ
ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةُ
فِى
ٱلَّذِينَ
ءَامَنُوا۟
لَهُمْ
عَذَابٌ
أَلِيمٌۭ
فِى
ٱلدُّنْيَا
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ
وَٱللَّهُ
يَعْلَمُ
وَأَنتُمْ
لَا
تَعْلَمُونَ
ﳗ
A painful punishment waits in this world and the next for those who like indecency to spread among the believers: God knows and you do not.

24:20
وَلَوْلَا
فَضْلُ
ٱللَّهِ
عَلَيْكُمْ
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
وَأَنَّ
ٱللَّهَ
رَءُوفٌۭ
رَّحِيمٌۭ
ﳡ
If it were not for God’s bounty and mercy and the fact that He is compassionate and merciful . . .!
