90:1
لَآ
أُقْسِمُ
بِهَـٰذَا
ٱلْبَلَدِ
ﱱ
I swear by this city––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:2
وَأَنتَ
حِلٌّۢ
بِهَـٰذَا
ٱلْبَلَدِ
ﱶ
and you [Prophet] are an inhabitant of this city––
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:3
وَوَالِدٍۢ
وَمَا
وَلَدَ
ﱺ
[I swear] by parent and offspring,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:4
لَقَدْ
خَلَقْنَا
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
فِى
كَبَدٍ
ﲀ
that We have created man for toil and trial.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:5
أَيَحْسَبُ
أَن
لَّن
يَقْدِرَ
عَلَيْهِ
أَحَدٌۭ
ﲇ
Does he think that no one will have power over him?
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:6
يَقُولُ
أَهْلَكْتُ
مَالًۭا
لُّبَدًا
ﲌ
‘I have squandered great wealth,’ he says.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:7
أَيَحْسَبُ
أَن
لَّمْ
يَرَهُۥٓ
أَحَدٌ
ﲒ
Does he think no one observes him?
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:8
أَلَمْ
نَجْعَل
لَّهُۥ
عَيْنَيْنِ
ﲗ
Did We not give him eyes,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:9
وَلِسَانًۭا
وَشَفَتَيْنِ
ﲚ
a tongue, lips,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:10
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ
ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ
ﲝ
and point out to him the two clear ways [of good and evil]?
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:11
فَلَا
ٱقْتَحَمَ
ٱلْعَقَبَةَ
ﲡ
Yet he has not attempted the steep path.
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:12
وَمَآ
أَدْرَىٰكَ
مَا
ٱلْعَقَبَةُ
ﲦ
What will explain to you what the steep path is?
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:13
فَكُّ
رَقَبَةٍ
ﲩ
It is to free a slave,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:14
أَوْ
إِطْعَـٰمٌۭ
فِى
يَوْمٍۢ
ذِى
مَسْغَبَةٍۢ
ﲰ
to feed at a time of hunger
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:15
يَتِيمًۭا
ذَا
مَقْرَبَةٍ
ﲴ
an orphaned relative
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:16
أَوْ
مِسْكِينًۭا
ذَا
مَتْرَبَةٍۢ
ﲹ
or a poor person in distress,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:17
ثُمَّ
كَانَ
مِنَ
ٱلَّذِينَ
ءَامَنُوا۟
وَتَوَاصَوْا۟
بِٱلصَّبْرِ
وَتَوَاصَوْا۟
بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ
ﳃ
and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion.

90:18
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
أَصْحَـٰبُ
ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
ﳇ
Those who do this will be on the right-hand side,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:19
وَٱلَّذِينَ
كَفَرُوا۟
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا
هُمْ
أَصْحَـٰبُ
ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
ﱇ
but those who disbelieve in Our revelations will be on the left-hand side,
M.A.S. Abdel Haleem
90:20
عَلَيْهِمْ
نَارٌۭ
مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ
ﱋ
and the Fire will close in on them.
